Love Advice for PerfectionistsLorraine's Story: “The Picky and Particular”Lorraine was sceptical about love advice and coaching, yet she knew that being picky was her downfall. “Yes, I’m a perfectionist,” she admitted, and I’m not dropping my standards. I’ve succeeded in all areas of my life, but I’m a failure because I haven’t had any long-term relationships.” The first shift that Lorraine needed to make, was in her belief that she was a failure because she wasn’t ‘perfect’ in all areas of her life. Her success in her work, had given her a ‘strong, powerful woman’ persona, and brought out her ‘masculine’ energy. She admitted that many men found it intimidating to be with a woman who was sharp and ‘knew it all’. “I didn’t realise that I came across as wanting to be right and to know best. Raising my awareness that this kind of behaviour left others powerless, was hard to swallow. What made it easier to acknowledge was the supportive yet gently challenging and positive perspective of my coach.” Lorraine says today. “Removing the pressures I had put myself under was like shedding a skin. It was a relief to discover that I’d developed this front because of my fear of intimacy. Not only did I feel liberated from these old layers that had been restricting me, but I also found a new freedom in giving myself permission to be all of me - strong as well as vulnerable.
