1. Listen attentively

3. Ask open questions.
These are questions that don’t require ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ answers and usually begin with ‘what, who, where, when’ etc. They can open up conversations, so that instead of simply listening to facts, you are asking for more information or broadening a discussion e.g.- What did you think of…?
- Where did you ….?
- What did you enjoy about…?
- How else could we …?
- How would you react if….?
- When would be a good time to call?

- Could you put it another way to help me understand?
- Isn’t it a matter of …….?

6. Leave open the chance of other courses of action e.g.
- Perhaps we could …..?
- Is this the only option?
- What other movie would you like to see?
- Can we look at it this way?
- Next time could we….?
7. Check the facts.
- Where did you hear that?
- I’ve read a different article on...
8. Admit it openly if you are mistaken
This is one of the most important aspects of good communication e.g.- This is my mistake!
- You’re right. I got it wrong.
- That’s quite correct, I should have …..
9. Show your caring and support. e.g.
- Yes, it is disappointing, but let me….
- You are quite right to be cross, but I can…
- There is every reason to feel upset, and …
- Tell me the details, I may hear of ….
